If you were a child in the 80's, I wonder, did you have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
I did and I loved her very much.
I remember choosing her in the toy shop, attracted to her yellow hair and matching yellow dress. I remember that her adoption certificate read "Dawn Cordelia" but I officially changed her name to "Samantha Dawn" and I was issued with a new birth certificate.
I cried when my mum put her in the washing machine.
I remember whispering to her to hold her breath.
I was seven.
I still have Samantha and I still have her birth certificate.
And the envelope it came in.
And her 1st Birthday Card that I received in the post.
So this week when I spotted a very dirty, naked Cabbage Patch Kid (circa 1985) at the opshop, I knew he was for me.
First up, he endured a good wash in the machine.
I didn't whisper to him this time. I knew he'd be okay.
Then I pulled out my collection of Cabbage Patch Doll clothes, many lovingly handknitted by my late Nanna, in anticipation.
He came up just lovely.
His name is Jared Owen.
Awww, look at these new friends, I'm so happy for them!
